"kobble Hurst at 2895 Colquitz Avenue, Saanich, is one of the best examples in Saanich of an early 20th century Arts and Crafts house. It was designed and built by David Herbert Bale in 1911 for Cowper and Willemina Newbury. The house is on the Sanich Heritage Register.
About 1910, John Newbury bought 20 acres of farmland north of the Gorge, a tidal inlet running inland from Victoria harbour. He subdivied these 20 acres into building lots and named two of the streets running through the subdivision Newbury Street and Cowper Street after his parents' families. Cowper Street and Newbury Street retain those original names today.
Cowper Newbury bought four of these orginal twenty building lots from his brother in order to rewtire to what was then considered a rural area. Cowper Newbury then had David Herbert Bale design and build this house for himself and his wife Willemina on one of those lots.
Cowper and Willemina Newbury cultivated fine gardens on this property and also bred goats. Cowper kept a prize herd of Saanens goats and was an active member of the British Columbia Goat Breeders Association.
Cowper Newbury died in 1930. His wife Willemina owned this house until her death in 1972.
